The First Lady of Power
Aug. 14th, 2011 12:51 pmAbout Damsel:
"... Damsel is that rare thing, a superhero by inheritance, her name a half-serious play on her father's vocation..."
While Damsel is in her late thirties, she looks younger than her actual age. She stands at around 5'8" and has a slight frame, but she's very athletic and deceptively sturdy. She always wears her dark brown hair long enough to cover her ears, and her face is usually partially obscured by a domino mask. Her outfit usually consists of close-fitting spandex with a fair bit of skin showing, materials reinforced to match her invulnerability. She also carries wire-wrapped dual swords.
Born out of a complicated circumstance, Damsel has an unconventional back-story. Her mother was the princess of an alien oceanic planet, barely recognizable as human, with green skin and enlarged human hands and ears, and otherwise definitely not even mammalian. Her father, Stormcloud, was a pilot who gained the powers of tropical hurricanes after disappearing into the Bermuda Triangle. As the leader of the Super Squadron, a league of superheroes, he saved the princess' planet and was allowed to marry her as a show of gratitude. As a wedding present to his new wife, Stormcloud used his team's advanced science to combine their genetics to create Damsel -- a clone with attributes of both her parents, though predominately a female version of her father. Her biology, however, is quite imperfect; she's red-green colorblind, her blood type is irregular, and her body has difficulty accepting regular human foods, so she throws up frequently. Unfortunately, others often assume this to be a psychologically-based eating disorder. Radiation from the sun dampens her powers. Her breath smells of cinnamon.
Despite this bizarre origin, though, Damsel lived a relatively normal life until her sixteenth birthday. Her mother returned home to rule when Damsel was only nine, and their communication after that was infrequent. Damsel was put in the private school system and remained there until graduation with relatively little fanfare. However, while her father remarried a superheroine named Regina, Damsel's biological abilities began emerging. Gifted with flight, forcefields and superstrength, Damsel took to the skies as a superheroine herself. After a short stint as a secretary, she became a superheroine full-time and abandoned her civilian persona. Since the Super Squadron discriminated against non-humans, she led a different team, the Champions, until their break-up. She was also briefly married to Blackwolf, a human vigilante who she went to post-secondary school with, but it didn't last.
Damsel has long struggled with her identity as a non-human, as a clone, as a reject of the Squadron, and as leader of the Champions. She has difficulty defining herself in any way other than as "Damsel", and she seldom thinks of herself as "Ellen" –– the only time she feels she has a solid identity is when she is saving the world and saving lives as a superheroine. Though she is an adept leader and commands teams with ease, alone and in her weakest moments, she is an incredibly vulnerable person and easily succumbs to self-loathing. Though she keeps up a facade of being disinterested in people's opinions, almost seeming bored with many of her interactions, she very much worries about what people think about her. It's hard to get a smile out of her.
Her life is very much defined by her failures, but she remains a superheroine first and foremost, and she soldiers on through loss and failure by hiding those feelings away. Her forcefield powers aren't only a physical ability, as she keeps a strong mental forcefield up to keep people out. As such, she can be somewhat intimidating and nearly impossible to read, though for the most part she remains gracious and polite when dealing with people, aside from the tendency to use a lot of swear words or sometimes be very belittling with people she is frustrated with. Everything is business, though she maintains a few down-to-earth hobbies; an interest in fashion, bickering with her ex-husband, running charity events and scrapbooking.
In Paradisa, as an outsider, little is known about her current status, although she seems to be operating with the hostiles. Though she seems fine with deliberately misleading the residents, she is apparently also concerned about their safety.
